ABOUT IRMA BERMUDEZ

Payroll Has Been My Career. Transformation Has Become My Mission.

For more than 20 years, I have worked at the heart of payroll, leading complex operations, navigating transformation, implementing technology and experiencing first-hand the enormous responsibility that comes with making sure people are paid accurately and on time.

But throughout my career, I have also seen something else.

Payroll professionals are often responsible for one of the most critical functions in an organisation, yet too much of their expertise is consumed by manual processes, fragmented systems, repetitive work and constant operational pressure.

And I believe that is beginning to change.

Artificial Intelligence, automation and new technologies are creating an opportunity to rethink not only how payroll operates, but the role payroll professionals can play within the organisation.

That is the future I have chosen to focus my work on.

From Payroll Professional To Transformation Leader

I didn’t begin my career thinking I would one day be speaking about Artificial Intelligence.

I began in payroll.

And over more than two decades, my career has taken me through payroll management, global operations, implementations, vendor management, process improvement and large-scale transformation across complex international environments.

I’ve experienced the realities behind the processes. The deadlines that cannot move. The systems that don’t always behave as expected. The reconciliation that suddenly doesn’t reconcile. The last-minute change that arrives after cut-off. And the enormous responsibility of knowing that behind every number on a payroll file is a real person expecting to be paid correctly.

Those experiences shaped the way I think about transformation today.

Because technology alone doesn’t transform payroll.

People do.

Technology gives us new capabilities. But experience, judgement, governance and human expertise determine how those capabilities should be used. And that belief has become central to everything I do.

Then AI Changed The Question

When I began experimenting seriously with Artificial Intelligence in my own work, I wasn’t trying to become a technologist. I was trying to solve problems.

Could I analyse information faster? Could I simplify a complicated process? Could I communicate something more clearly? Could I reduce the time spent on repetitive work? Could I use technology to help me think differently about a problem I had solved manually for years?

The more I experimented, the more possibilities I saw. And eventually, the question changed.

It was no longer: “How can AI help me work faster?”

It became: “What could this mean for the future of payroll?”

That question ultimately became much bigger than my own work.

Why I Founded The AI Payroll Institute

I founded the AI Payroll Institute because I could see a gap.

There was an enormous conversation happening around Artificial Intelligence, but much of it wasn’t being translated into the everyday reality of payroll professionals.

Payroll doesn’t need more technology hype.

Payroll professionals need to understand what these technologies actually mean for their work, their skills, their teams, and their careers.

The AI Payroll Institute exists to help bridge that gap — combining practical payroll expertise with AI, automation, analytics, communication, transformation and the human capabilities that will become increasingly important as the profession evolves.

My goal isn’t to turn payroll professionals into technologists.

It’s to help them become future-ready payroll professionals.

Why I Speak

After more than 20 years in payroll, there is one message I increasingly want to take beyond individual organisations:

Payroll professionals should not be spectators in the transformation of their own profession.

We should be helping to shape it.

That is why I speak about Artificial Intelligence, payroll transformation, leadership and the future of work.

My keynotes combine real payroll experience with practical insight, storytelling and humour because I don’t believe people change simply because we show them another slide full of statistics.

People change when they recognise themselves in the story. When they laugh because they’ve experienced exactly what you’re describing. When they think:

“Yes. That’s my team.” “Yes. We’ve done that.” “Yes. I’ve felt that.”

And then, hopefully: “Maybe there’s another way.”

My goal when I walk onto a stage isn’t simply to explain what Artificial Intelligence can do. It’s to help people see what they could do differently because it exists.

What I Believe

I believe payroll is entering one of the most important periods of change our profession has experienced.

Some of the work we have performed manually for decades will disappear. Other work will become dramatically faster. New responsibilities will emerge. And the skills organisations value in payroll professionals will evolve.

But I don’t believe that makes payroll expertise less important. I believe it creates an opportunity to use that expertise differently.

To spend less time processing information and more time interpreting it. Less time producing reports and more time explaining what they mean. Less time performing repetitive work and more time solving problems. Less time asking for payroll to become strategic and more time demonstrating the strategic value payroll already holds.

That is why one idea sits at the centre of my work:

AI will not replace payroll professionals. But it will replace the way payroll is done.

And I want payroll professionals to be ready for what comes next.

My work brings together the different parts of my career around one common purpose.
